Muskegon Hospitals merger
discussions official
Muskegon,
MI - September 12, 2007: After a century of serving
the West Michigan community, Hackley Health and Mercy Health Partners have begun the public process of evaluating
a merger between the two healthcare systems.
For over 100 years, both Hackley Health and Mercy have delivered high quality healthcare to the lakeshore community.
Both have recently been recognized nationally for delivering
high quality care by being named a Top 100 Hospital in the
Nation by Solucient.
“I am hopeful about the opportunities a merger between
Mercy Health Partners and Hackley Health could bring
to this community,” says Roger Spoelman, President and
CEO of Mercy. “This community has been
committed to using local healthcare providers for their needs.
Our goal is to continue meeting those needs for many years
to come.”
Much work has been done to determine if a merger is reasonable
between the two organizations. An extensive feasibility
study was recently completed to assess opportunities for healthcare
delivery in the community. The respective Boards of
Trustees signed a formal Letter of Intent and required notices
to the federal government will be implemented soon.
For the healthcare industry, there are many unknowns that
make financial stability, physician recruiting, investment
in medical technology, and facility infrastructure challenging.
By merging the two hospital systems, services already provided
to the community would be enhanced to better serve the needs
of patients and their families.
“The future of healthcare in our community is filled
with extraordinary potential as the result of this historic
opportunity,” said Gordon A. Mudler, Hackley Health
President and CEO. “Two storied healthcare traditions
- both recognized nationally – have come together with
a commitment to continuing quality, innovation, and leading
edge services for all.”
Ten years ago, Mercy Hospital and Muskegon General Hospital
merged to form Mercy Health Partners. Mercy is a member of Trinity Health, based in Novi, Michigan,
the fourth largest Catholic Healthcare System in the country.
Hackley Health is an independent healthcare organization.
From 2000 – 2004, Hackley was a member of Spectrum Health
in Grand Rapids.
