Local Physicians Earn Senior Fellow in
Hospital Medicine Designation

June 17, 2010, Muskegon, MI - The Society of Hospital Medicine has announced that Rolf Hissom, M.D. and Joan Nagelkirk, M.D. of Specialists in Hospital Medicine, are among the more than 150 hospitalists nationwide who have earned the first-ever Senior Fellow in Hospital Medicine (SFHM) designation.

As hospitalists, Drs. Hissom and Nagelkirk are physicians whose practices are devoted to treating patients in hospital settings, primarily at Mercy Health Partners’ inpatient settings. Along with other honors, Drs. Hissom and Nagelkirk have now earned the right to add “SFHM” to their credentials.

The inaugural class of SFHM designees represents hospital medicine’s experienced leaders. To be designated as a Senior Fellow in Hospital Medicine, an applicant must:

  • Serve as a hospitalist for at least five years,
  • Be a member of Society of Hospital Medicine for at least five years, and
  • Demonstrate their dedication to quality and process improvement, commitment to organizational teamwork and leadership, as well as lifelong learning and education.

“We are not aware of any other facility in the nation that has more than one Senior Fellow in Hospital Medicine. To have both of these dedicated and excellent physicians in our community is truly an honor,” shares Roger Spoelman, President and CEO, Mercy Health Partners.

“Our new SFHM designees combine the innovation and experience that make hospital medicine such a vital and visionary medical specialty,” said SHM’s CEO, Larry Wellikson, MD, SFHM. “We hope that hospitals and communities will join us in congratulating these individuals in their leadership, experience and service to improving patient care in the hospital.”

Hissom and Nagelkirk were inducted into the inaugural class of Senior Fellows at SHM annual’s meeting in Washington, DC on April 10, 2010. The inaugural class of Master Fellows in Hospital Medicine (MHM) and second class of Fellows in Hospital Medicine (FHM) joined them.
