Center for Breast Imaging
Mercy Health Partners offers screening mammograms at four convenient locations: the Hackley, Mercy and Lakes Campuses in Muskegon and the Lakeshore Campus in Shelby. Mammography is the process of using low-dose X-Rays to examine the breast. The goal of mammography is the early detection of breast cancer, typically through detection of characteristic masses and/or microcalcifications. Mammography has been shown to reduce mortality from breast cancer.
Mercy Health Partners will soon offer full field digital mammography, which produces digital or computerized images. Digital mammography provides increased image quality, ease of image manipulation, improved means of storage, retrieval and image management. Digital mammography is beneficial to women of all ages by decreasing the number of recall exams. The window and leveling functionality of digital mammography allows the radiologist to manipulate the images rather than have you return for additional images. Digital mammography proves especially beneficial to young women, pre- and perimenopausal women and women with dense breasts. Computer Aided Detection (CAD) is applied to all screening mammograms. It uses computer algorithms to highlight suspicious areas on the mammogram.
If needed, Mercy Health Partners offers additional testing including; spot compression and magnification views, breast ultrasound, breast needle localizations for surgical excision, stereotactic and ultrasound guided breast biopsies with clip placement and sentinel node biopsy.
A baseline screening mammogram should be done between the ages of 35 and 40. The American Cancer Society recommends women age 40 and older should have a screening mammogram every year, and should continue to do so for as long as they are in good health. The highest risk factor for developing breast cancer is being a woman. Call 231-672-4800 to schedule your mammogram today.
